Kamikazee releases Long Time Noisy

MANILA, Philippines - Universal Records releases Kamikazee’s third album Long Time Noisy featuring the launching single Wala. Long Time Noisy is the band’s follow-up of its double platinum breakthrough album Maharot.
Kamikazee was formed by five friends who met at the University of the Philippines-Diliman: Jay Contreras (lead vocals), Jomal Linao (guitars), Led Zeppelin Tuyay (guitars), Jason “Puto” Astete (bass) and Allan “Bords” Burdeos (drums).
Kamikazee took three years to construct and record Long Time Noisy as they balanced its grueling gig schedules and desire to release the best album it can possibly come up with. And it did exactly that with the new album.
Long Time Noisy is Kamikazee’s best and most consistent album. The group continues its brand of heavy rock, dosed with pop sensibilities and witty lyrical ideas. The single Wala is somewhat uncharacteristic, a cynical social commentary laden with heavy pop hooks. The album opens with two high-energy love-themed songs Ikaw (Kapirasong Langit sa Lupa) and another paean to unrequited love Hanggang Tingin (which contains one of the most headbang-inducing heavy instrumental adlibs in a love song ever). Eschoos Me is the band’s rakista anthem.
Songs such as 4:20, Unang Tikim and Hot Mami show the band’s tendency for witty double entendres while Kamikazee’s explosive cover of Francis Magalona’s Meron Akong Ano is a worth the price of admission. Lalandiin is a funky spoken word song that puts a hilarious D.O.M. twist to Mr. Suave.
The acoustic Alay has radio hit potential while tracks such as M.M.K. (Maalaala Mo Kami) and the scathing Chismosa should keep avid Kamikazee fans occupied with its funny interludes.

Entertainment Guide/Music

Kamikazee frontman Jay Contreras is not bothered by the fact that his band has only released three studio albums for the past nine years that they have been together.

"Hindi naman namin iniisip yon," said the mischievous vocalist with a wide smile.

STOPS, MISSES AND HITS. Writing and arranging songs to fill up an entire record is never easy. But personal responsibilities somewhat hindered the band from immediately releasing a follow up to the double-platinum selling Maharot took a long time to hit the shelves.

Yes! Despite the band's image as an irreverent and humorous bunch, the quintet of Jay, Jomal Linao, Led Zeppelin Tuyay, Jason "Puto" Astete and Allan "Bords" Burdeos are all responsible family men with normal joys and concerns outside the confines of the cliché rock n' roll lifestyle. The recent drug-related controversy faced by Tuyay in Dubai also forced the band to temporarily hold off studio time.

"Parang every album na ginagawa namin may process siya. Siguro next time, yon yung natutunan namin kasi wala kaming sobrang material nung nag-umpisa kaming mag-record, e. Nung kelangan nung deadline, wala e, isa lang yata yong kanta namin," laughed Led Zeppelin

With the completion and release of Kamikazee's new album titled Long Time Noisy, the band is once again back in top form to reclaim their place as one of the most sought after local bands both in the recording scene and live circuit.

The three-year gap turned out to be beneficial especially to the fans as the band were able to produce more than enough songs, making the much-anticipated record a worthy buy.

Long Time Noisy lives up to the band's tradition of mixing heavy rock and pop-all meshed with witty in-your-face lyrics. Kamikazee's latest effort meanders from an assortment of subjects: unrequited love ("Hanggang Tingin"), socio-commentary ("Chismosa"), political ("Wala"), and other mundane random experiences ("Hot Mami").

The album also contains a cover of Francis Magalona's energetic number, "Meron Akong Ano." Francis was supposed to join the band in recording the song but he unfortunately succumbed to leukemia weeks before the session.

Long Time Nosiy is now available at all record bars nationwide courtesy of Universal Records.

celebrity life/events

The "maharot" band
Kamikazee bagged the most number of awards in the 20th Awit Awards last night, August 8, at the NBC Tent, The Fort, Taguig. These include two major awards: Album of the Year for Maharot and Song of the Year for their hit single titled "Narda."

Other awards they received were Best Rock ("Narda"), Best Perfomance by a Group Artist ("Narda"), and Music Video of the Year ("Martyr Nyebera").

In the middle of the program, the band kept the audience alive by performing their newest single from the album Maharot, "Seksi Seksi." Jay Contreras, the vocalist, was so energetic that he even had danced with a member of the audience.

Another big winner last night was the band Kala, which got four awards. Two of these distinctions were based on their popularity through text votes. A lot of their followers sent text votes for the categories Favorite Group ("Jeepney") and Favorite New Group Artist ("Manila High"). For the major awards, they bagged the titles Best Performance by a New Group Recording Artist and Best World/Alternative/Bossa Music.

The Soul Siren Nina received two People's Choice awards—Favorite Song of the Year and Favorite Female Artist—for her song "Someday," which was composed by her former boyfriend, Nyoy Volante.

The Best Selling Album of the Year award, which is based solely on the record sales, was given to the album KaminAPO Muna under Universal Records. Meanwhile, the simple design of Sugarfree's Talaarawan got the Best Album Package award.

PERFORMERS AND PRESENTORS. The 20th Awit Awards is considered the local counterpart of the US Grammy Awards. Like The Grammys, the awards event at the NBC Tent last night was definitely star-studded.

The program started with band performances by Imago, Itchyworms, Sandwich, Spongecola, and Sugarfree. Bamboo and The Dawn also played their popular songs, to the audience's sheer enjoyment.
Parokya ni Edgar went freestyle with two well-known rappers, Francis M. and Gloc-9, for the song "Bagsakan."

Mr. Pure Energy, Gary Valenciano, danced with his son Gabrielle to the tune of "Shake It Off," which bagged the Best Dance award.

Sitti and The Company, the group which got two minor awards during the press night last July 19 , serenaded the people with their bossa nova version of Jose Mari Chan's popular ballad songs. Christian Bautista and Rachelle Ann Go looked completely in love with each other during their duet.

Other artists who attended the event to present awards were Ogie Alcasid, Billy Crawford, Raymond Lauchengco, Andrew E., Sheryn Regis, Chris Cayzer, the duo Ariel and Maverick, and director Quark Henares. The rock bands Calla Lily, Chicosci, and Session Road also joined the list of award presentors.

To end the program, singer-songwriter Ogie Alcasid and Asia's Songbird Regine Velasquez performed a specially arranged medley, culled from the songs "Kailangan Kita" and "Narito Ako."

Here are the other winners in the 20th Awit Awards:

Best Performance by a Female Recording Artist - Lani Misalucha, "I Live For Your Love"
Best Performance by a Male Recording Artist - Gary Valenciano, "In Another Lifetime"
Best Performance by a Duet - Mon David and Bituin Escalante, "Alone Together"
Best Performance by a New Female Recording Artist - a tie between Sitti and Amber for the song "Para sa Akin" and "Manila," respectively.
Best Performance by a New Male Recording Artist - Gian Magdangal, "Himala"
Best R&B - Reuben Laurente and Regine Velasquez, "A Single Soul"
Best Novelty - Jose Manalo and Wally Bayola, "Kring Song"
Best Song Written for Movie/TV/Stage Play - Kitchie Nadal, "Majika"

SPECIAL AWARD. "Dapat 'to matagal na!" Joey "Pepe" Smith said half-jokingly as he received the Dangal ng Musikang Pilipino award in behalf of his band, Juan dela Cruz. His bandmate Wally Gonzalez was just as happy on receiving the coveted trophy, which is shaped like a gong.

Their bassist, Mike Hanopol, was unable to join the band in enjoying the honor given by the Philippine Association of the Recording Industry (PARI) because he is currently in the United States.

Before receiving the award, Gonzalez, who was the original member of Juan dela Cruz, rocked NBC Tent together with another Pinoy band named Kjwan by playing the band's hit song "Beep Beep." During the performance, the former Juan dela Cruz fret-burner was given a moment to show off his guitar skills. With this, Gonzales proved that he could still keep up with the younger generation of rock bands.

After that smoking hot exhibition, Gonzales and Smith played another hit song of Juan dela Cruz, "Himig Natin," which is said to have started the Pinoy rock movement. After their "mini-concert," Smith gave this message to aspiring bands, "Balang araw, kayo din magra-rock and roll!"

Aside from honoring Juan dela Cruz, PARI also paid homage to the late King of Philippine Novelty Song, Yoyoy Villame.

kamikazee

The band is composed of five members who met in college at the College of Fine Arts of the University of the Philippines Diliman. Kamikazee's early gigs were mostly on campus events in UP Diliman like the annual UP Fair. Before they were signed in a major label, they went by the name "Kamikazee Cornflakes" (eventually shortened to its current state as "Kamikazee" which is easier to remember). Their early shows included renditions of the songs "Mmm Sarap", "Tsinelas", a cover of Ariel Rivera's "Sana Kahit Minsan", and Britney Spears' Lucky. They were known for using expletives, suggestive movements, and references to genitalia in their UP Diliman performances.
Kamikazee released their first self titled album in 2002. The album's carrier single was a heavy cover version of the Britney Spears song "Lucky". In 2005, the band released "Chiksilog" as part of the compilation album Rok On!. Other notable songs include "Girlfriend", "Ung Tagalog", "Tsinelas" and their cover song of Ariel Rivera's "Sana Kahit Minsan". In 2006 they released their second album, Maharot. The carrier single of the album was "Narda", which is thought to be about the fictional Filipina heroine Darna. "Narda" was a popular hit in 2006, and gained constant airplays in radios on the same year. Later in 2009, "Narda" was be used as a soundtrack for GMA Network's primetime show Darna which stars Marian Rivera in her title role.
The band maintains close ties with another popular Filipino band, Parokya ni Edgar (PNE). Chito Miranda, PNE's vocalist, met the band members in college as he was also studying in the College of Fine Arts. In events with Parokya ni Edgar on the line-up, one band's singer would normally jam with the other band. On Parokya ni Edgar's live sessions, Contreras frequently joined Miranda on songs like "Okatokat", "Chikinini" and "The Yes Yes Show." Jay does back-up vocals to PNE's hit song "The Order Taker" while Linao was on lead guitars. In turn, Kaye Abad, Chito's former girlfriend, was on back-up vocals in Kamikazee's song "Martyr Nyebera". Sarah Abad-Contreras, sister of Kaye Abad was married to Jay Contreras on February 12, 2009 held at Paco Park.
The 3rd Album "Long Time Noisy" took the band 3 years to construct as the band balanced their tough schedules. The album was recorded at Tower of Doom Studios with producer Eric Perlas.
